Why do I need a dietitian?
There is so much information out there in the world - online, among friends and family, in books, magazines, and on buses - everyone seems to be an expert in nutrition. To boot, they promise that if you do x-y-and-z (insert magic bullet here), you will achieve health and happiness, and pretty much a perfect life. This mantra has many of us in its vicious cycle, and leaves many of us feeling disheartened, mistrusting, and in fact, unhappy.
As a dietitian, when I first meet with clients, I take the time to ask them about the foods they enjoy, but also, take the time to explore their food environment, support system, cultural food practices, and priorities for their health. Food is so much more than what we put on our plates - there are many factors that help us get closer to a joyful, healthy, and happy self.
Food is likely the most important element in our lives, as without it, we will not survive. When we think about food in this way, we start to recognize that food can be a vehicle for energy, fulfilment, and sustainment, and therefore, more of a priority that we may have initially thought.
A dietitian will listen respectfully to your story, help you better understand the scientific evidence of why certain foods are going to help your individual needs and goals for health, and provide you with the guidance and positive encouragement as you navigate the world of food.
